This page is intended to be a usefull resourced for others planning a great adventure. I've tried to include anything we've learned along the way. I've also kept our preperation info for our intended overland trip posted. (FYI: Planning and executing a backpacking trip sure is a lot easier (not to mention significantly less expensive) than a vehicle supported overland expedition.)

As a rough estimate, our trip cost about $1000 USD/person/month, including airfare. There wasn't too much of a difference between cheap and more expensive countries, as we simply did more when we could afford it. Also, our lodging and eating standards changed along with the cost of living. However, I am confident our trip could be completed at probably 20-30% less cost. By the half way point of the trip we were typically paying $20 a night for nice lodging, vs. $14 ($7/person) for seperate bunks in a noisey hostel. Additionally, we started taking business class overnight buses after an unusually miserable bus ride in Peru. Not only are they cleaner, more comfortable, and quiet, but they are significantly faster. All at a marginal increase in price. After being on the road for so long, simple luxuries like a private bathroom and clean accomadations were well worth the additional costs. |
